Term 2 Professional Learning Seminar

English Teachers Association WA
Applecross SHS
Links Road, Ardross 6153
Thursday 31st May, 4:30pm – 6:30pm

The ETAWA would like to invite members to an afternoon of professional learning to coincide with Reconciliation Week. This year, the theme is ‘don’t keep history a mystery’ and the ETAWA, through our guest presenters, hope to enable our members to contribute meaningfully to this theme.

Session 1: Storytelling

This session will be presented by Mrs. Donella Brown, Aboriginal Liaison Officer at Irene McCormack Catholic College. Donella will explore the traditions and significance of storytelling within Aboriginal cultures, as well as how teachers might introduce Aboriginal stories into their classrooms in a sensitive and culturally appropriate way.

Session 2: Owning Your History

As a 17-year-old, Brianne Yarran wrote and featured in an award-winning documentary about her journey to learn more of grandmother’s history as a member of the Stolen Generations. Brianne, along with director and producer Kimberley Benjamin will discuss her documentary and members of the Carine SHS English department will share how they are using this in their classroom.
Other resources for supporting Aboriginal texts in the English classroom will be advertised.

  • Refreshments will be supplied.
  • There is free onsite parking at Applecross SHS
  • Public transport links along Canning Hwy and Risely St are regular.
  • The session will be held in the auditorium.
  • The PD session will be followed by the 2018 AGM – all members are invited to attend.
